Fire Walls

So… it has been a while that I have not written but it could always be worst! College is busy! my Ubuntu machine ran out of support so had to pick another DISTRO. Went with Parrot OS, Why Parrot? well it suit my needs, It is perfect because it does have a whole bunch of developer tools as well as it does have a bunch of security features and tools that you might use in the future. I do love security don’t get me wrong but this is a long run so I have to know how to stuff work on the back end which is the whole developer part. When it comes to security i guess you have to go all out so therefore I installed my own firewall.. I am not going to mention which firewall but there are a whole bunch of firewalls you can use for free. Why? Open Source. I have to support the community so I love open source. Why a Fire Wall? well, Why not? If you are going to be in the security field, you might as well go all out and be about it, not just talk about it. build some of that experience it might be helpful one day. I guess one day I want to be able to automate everything using Python. In the last few weeks I put my self through a boot camp ” The one from Caleb Curry” But at the same time I have intro to Database in school and positive psychology. I love being positive and helping others. I am also pretty good with databases. we used Access, I didn’t even know about access but I was good with SQL so I did everything for the most part the SQL way. Why that way and not the GUI? well I think doing it the SQL way transfer more into the rest of the SQL language. So I was like I need to keep my skills up to day so lets just take on the challenge for my self instead of doing it the easy way. Thanks God I finished this term and some how I am still 4.00 GPA. Don’t ask me how, I am just trying to take everything one day at a time and just being positive about it.

Back to firewalls.. I think if you are going to be in the security field you have to protect yourself, not just talking about it but being about it. If you install a firewall then it will give you experience. What experience? in my opinion once you learn how to use firewalls you can block people/ networks, left and right. I have block ips from China, Russia, Ukraine. I am like ” WTF this people doing in the US ” it is not that hard to block them once you have a firewall, it is not that hard to figure out.

I also like Security Onion and I am experiencing right now with. 1st, Installing Security Onion on a VM is something different than installing it on a Physical Machine. In a physical machine you need to have the required hardware. This is when the networking part comes into play, you have to network tap in to your network. You have to know about setting up static IPs and how you are going to monitor the network as well playing with Security Onion teach you how to monitor your network.

I also figured out how to use Python to send commands to the OS as well as send commands to any DB as well as the Firewall. It is an awesome time to be alive.

I have like six months left until i finish my bachelors so I am happy so far.

This is all for now.

TTYL,

Very Respectfully,

Santi
